Student Engagement Status Chips in Crystal

Introduction

Student Engagement Status Chips help faculty quickly identify how actively students are participating during a live class. The system automatically analyzes student interactions over rolling 15-minute intervals and categorizes engagement levels so faculty can intervene in real time when attention drops.

This feature removes the need for manual monitoring and scales effectively even in large batches.

What can you do with engagement status chips?

Faculty

  • View real-time engagement levels for each student

  • Identify low-engaged students quickly

  • Filter and sort students based on engagement status

  • Take timely action to re-engage students during class

Students

  • No visible changes. Engagement status is not shown to students.

How engagement status works

Engagement is calculated automatically every 15 minutes starting from the class start time. The system uses passive interaction signals to compute an engagement score for each student.

Signals considered include:

  • Chat messages

  • Emoji or reaction usage

  • Poll responses

  • Mic unmute events

  • Speaking activity

  • Hand raise actions (when enabled)

Each signal contributes a weighted score. Total scores are recalculated every 15 minutes.

Students are then ranked relative to others in the same session and categorized as:

  • High engagement. Top 25 percent

  • Medium engagement. Middle 50 percent

  • Low engagement. Bottom 25 percent

The categorization is percentile-based and dynamic. There are no fixed thresholds.

Using engagement status during class

  1. Start a live class session.

  2. Open the student list.

  3. View engagement chips displayed next to student names.

  4. By default, low-engaged students appear at the top.

  5. Use filters to view:

    • All students

    • Low engagement

    • Medium engagement

    • High engagement

Engagement status updates silently every 15 minutes without interrupting the session.

Data & behavior

  • Engagement scores are recalculated every 15 minutes

  • Only interactions within the last 15-minute window are considered

  • If certain signals are unavailable, they are excluded without penalty

  • Engagement status is session-specific and resets for each class

Engagement shows as “Unknown”
This can happen if scoring fails temporarily. The status updates automatically once data becomes available.

Mic or speaking activity not counted
If mic unlock is disabled or speaking data is unavailable, those signals are excluded from scoring.

Poll interaction not counted
If no poll was launched in the last 15 minutes, poll responses are excluded from scoring.
